Abstract

Inflammation is one of the body's responses to tissue damage, exposure to foreign substances, immune responses, or a result of physical trauma. It's a common symptom in several diseases. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs, both steroid and non-steroid, is a commonly employed alternative, but their usage is known to cause harmful side effects to the body. This has spurred many studies on alternative herbal treatments. An interesting example discussed is the distinctive traditional plants from Bali as documented in the Usada Taru Premana (an ancient medical manuscript found in Bali).. This article will cover a summary of several typical Balinese plants proven to have anti-inflammatory properties through in vitro and in vivo testing. This study utilizes a literature review collecting data and information from search engines like PubMed, Google Scholar, using keywords (herbal, extract, medicinal plants, inflammation, taru premana), and scientific databases. The results of the literature study indicate that several plants listed in Usada Taru Premana have the potential to be developed into anti-inflammatory agents as an alternative to the use of synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs.
